Handwritten journal with inscription "Hugh D. McIntosh Governing Director Harry Rickards Tivoli Theatre Limited". Contains names of artists performing at the Theatre, salaries, number of weeks played at the venue, closing dates of shows and type of act performed, e.g. comedian, acrobat, baritone, juggler, skater, violinist, dancer, contortionist, illusionist, male impersonator, dog act, ventriloquist, xylophonist. Also included is a letter written by McIntosh to Mr Hill of the 'Daily Guardian', 1923.

Entrepreneur. Born Sept. 10, 1876 in Sydney. Ran away from school before the age of 10 to work as an ore-picker in Broken Hill. Eventually made money selling pies outside sporting events. After selling his catering business he invested in several hotels then in 1908 he built the Sydney Stadium at Rushcutters Bay. He promoted two fights with the American heavyweight champion Tommy Burns, the latter a title bout against black American, Jack Johnson, which McIntosh refereed. These fights including ...

In 1895, the Prince of Wales Opera House in Bourke Street was leased by Harry Rickards as the Melbourne home of his Tivoli vaudeville circuit. He built the New Opera House on the site in 1901 and it was renamed the Tivoli Theatre in 1912. The Tivoli operated as a live theatre until 1966.
